Yet Another Birthday Post and a Mother's Thoughts

And this is yet another birthday post and this time it's for Basti. He's now 11 years old! Yay!

rich Ultimate Chocolate by Red Ribbon, a serious celebrant and two birthday candles fanatics :)
How time flies and now, I'm really feeling old. In just a few years, my eldest would be in high school. Right now, he's practically a teenager. And I'm not sure I know how to cope with raising a teen, a male one for that matter. So, I'll just take this one day at a time, one step at a time, one issue at a time. Crossing my fingers that I won't mess up.

They say that this stage in a boy's life is really crucial, he's in a crossroads from being a kid to being a teen and on to being adult. The best I could do is show him that I'm always there for him every step of the way. Maybe, I'll loosen up a little bit on him and let  him be out there on his own a bit. Gosh, that is so hard. Times are different now, you see. The last time I let him out to be with friends, he got this:

Nasty eh? It's even nastier when it got infected. Ah, the cost of getting sick! We even thought we needed to have his arm cast for a broken bone. So glad the ortho doctor thought otherwise.

This 11 year old is growing so fast, not only physically but emotionally. I only wish that I'd be able to keep up, haha. I'm thankful each and every day that I am a mom to this wonderful young man. I'm celebrating my 11 years too as a mom. :) Yay for me!

Wow, Seven!

Wow, how time flies! My Sam just turned seven last week. We had a mini-party with his classmates at his school. Sam's such a happy birthday celebrant. He loved that he was the center of attention and basked in the warm greetings he was receiving that day. He beamed at everyone who greeted him as if to say, "Hey, I'm seven! I deserve all of this! Today is my day!" We did not have a grand party but he did enjoy the day and when asked, he said that he's happy.

I'm very proud of Sam. He has adjusted well in school and is now number one in his class. The teachers praise him for being attentive in class and being very active. He is a very diligent pupil. He never forgets to do his assignments and would often remind me that he has one.  I just wish that he'll keep this attitude till he grows up. I am thankful to be a mom to such a good kid.  :)

Halloween Masks and Costumes In Stores

It's once again a payday weekend and most parents, I'm pretty sure, are flocking to the super malls or to Divisoria or Baclaran to buy costumes for the Halloween. (for readers who haven't been to the Philippines, Divisoria and Baclaran are two places in Manila where people flock to buy good quality products at super affordable price, since most of the products are sold at wholesale price.)

I haven't gone yet to Baclaran to see what's in there. But I have gone to one of the most popular malls in our area last week. First day of October, these are what's on display.

Rows of pumpkin baskets. Don't forget to buy some for your little ones. So they could go treat-or-tricking in style.

And up above are what my eldest, Basti, would like to get as his costume. Gone were the days of Spiderman and Superman costumes. Those cute days are over. Now, all he really wants is to scare his classmates on Halloween for real.

I might buy him one of these. Sam will be using the same old Superman or Reaper costume or I may have to improvise something for both of the younger ones because I'm sure not gonna buy another one.

By the way, authorities have warned of harmful chemicals in certain Halloween masks and other items. So be very careful in choosing the right one, read the label. I'm really feeling lazy today, so I'll just gonna send you over to this news item from GMA Network to know more about this issue: {http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/276304/lifestyle/wellness/buying-halloween-stuff-check-the-label-for-harmful-chemicals}

Have a great weekend, everyone!

A Weekend Foodie Post on A Friday :)

Thank God it's Friday! It's my blogging day! I love Fridays, especially Fridays when I'm not loaded with work. Like today. Sad to say, I have no files to transcribe today. No work, no pay, right? But I'm sooooooo happy to say that I can finally make a post for Kids in Doodles.

Kids in Doodles theme is "How's your weekend?" So forgive me if it's Friday already and I'm talking about THE previous weekend. This and that happened -- ah, you know how it is.

Anyway, how was our last weekend? Well, it was a food-filled weekend. Remember Mama Tess which I talked about last week HERE. Well, her hubby celebrated his birthday Saturday and off we trooped to their house again. Our Tatay Poly (as we call him) is my father-in-law's younger brother. Since my father-in-law passed away years ago even before I met hubby, I had always considered Tatay Poly as my kids' lolo on hubby's side of the family. He celebrated his 59th birthday. I didn't know he's still that young.

We ate and ate and ate until our stomachs were full.

I love that smiling sun. Don't you? We had the ever-present pancit bihon, chocolate cake, biko (which hubby cooked), fried chicken, and fried lumpia and of course, refreshing softdrinks to match.

Of course, the kids -- Tatay Poly's grandson (not in the picture), my kids and their cousins, and  were the stars of the party. They took turns blowing the candle. In parties like this, a cake is not a cake without a candle on it. :)

Sunday morning, still full from Saturday's event, my sister fried something and left this on our kitchen table.

The kids and I thought they were chicken nuggets. It was only later when we took a bite did we realize that they were peeled baby potatoes, rolled in bread crumbs and fried. Really healthy and delicous! Even Sam ate a lot of these.

Then Sunday afternoon, hubby cooked his "specialty", spaghetti, which made the kids really, really happy.

There's a spaghetti merienda pack that you can buy at the store. It cost, I think, around only P45. We had to add a little bit more to that pack to feed a family of five, most of them boys.

So that was our weekend. We just lazed all day long at home Sunday, watching TV, movies, playing online and eating. Who said we need to go out of the house to have a good time?

How about you? How's your weekend?

Family Bonding at the Mall of Asia and Lessons Learned

One day in September,  the whole family trooped to the Mall of Asia for the Manila International Book Fair. It was raining all day but we braved the heavy rain just to get to the SMX at the Mall of Asia.
When we got there, we wanted to eat first but most of the restaurants inside the mall, especially restaurants kids love like Jollibee and McDo, were packed and we couldn't find any seats at all. It was a payday weekend, plus SM was having a grand sale that week so there was a throng of people in the mall. Lesson learned # 1, don't go to the mall on a payday sale weekend with the kids.

So we went back to the SMX and went inside the book fair.  We did not stay long at the book fair, though. Our first stop was Adarna House where the kids bought a book about Pilandok (the mouse deer character).  Simon was wide-eyed and couldn't contain his excitement seeing all the other books in the Adarna booth.

We visited some other booths but the kids were not as excited as I hoped they would be. Once outside, the fair, we just strolled around the Mall of Asia. We managed to get seated in KFC and the kids helped themselves to a satisfying lunch at almost three in the afternoon. Good thing we had a late breakfast and meryenda before leaving home.Lesson learned # 2, when going out with kids, always bring food and drinks and stash it in your bag.

The kids had more  fun posing for the camera than anything else.

We managed to buy a few books, and some toys. Most of them were for Sam.

The kids said they enjoyed the day at the Manila International Book Fair and would love to come back to the Mall of Asia.  Though I would really need to take more people with me. All of these boys actually had motion sickness all the way to MOA and I tell you, it was not easy. It's a good thing they were able to bounce back and were able to enjoy the day. And it's a good thing I packed extra clothes for me and the kids. :D Lesson learned #3, always always bring extra clothes, you'll never know what will happen.

Kids In Doodles: Favorite Person

Our Kid in Doodles meme has a special twist this week, we're going to talk about favorite persons in our children's lives.

I can pinpoint in a heartbeat who my children's favorite person is. No question about it, no doubt, she's my children's favorite person in the whole, wide world. Nay, in the whole universe. Her name is Mama Tess.

This is her with my youngest. It was her birthday two weeks ago. We went to their house and celebrated with her.

We brought her an Ultimate Chocolate from Red Ribbon, yum yum.

Mama Tess is my hubby's uncle's wife, so technically, she is my children's grandmother. But what a punky young grandmother she is! She's the one who's been taking care of my children from way back when she started 'borrowing" Basti when he's still a baby some ten years ago. No, she's not their nanny or anything like that. But she does take care of them really, really good. I call her whenever I can't handle the children anymore, which is practically everyday. :D

How do I know that my children love her? Well, all of them, at certain points in their young lives, cry whenever she leaves to go home to her house for the day. Simon, my four-year-old, is in that stage right now. He goes in a rage and crying fit almost everyday. I just let him cry it out. He just couldn't be without her. She just goes to the bathroom and Simon follows. She goes to the grocery store and Simon will go, too. She disappears out of sight for just a sec and Simon goes looking for her. Thank God, the other two are way past that stage.

I know my children are well taken care of when they're with her. They smell good, look good, eat well, and are happy when they're with her.  They go to her house and they come home noisy and giggling over everything. She is easily missed especially on weekdays. If you'll ask my little Simon who he loves the most, he'll say Mama Tess. And then, I'll pretend to cry and he'll say, "Joke yun, mama." Jealous? Nah. They love her so much but they know I am their mom.

I, myself, am amazed by her ability to communicate with children. She is soooooo patient with them. No question is left unanswered. Sometimes, I hear Simon and Mama Tess talk with each other and I hear her talk with him in a level that he can understand. Imagine spending all day with no TV, just talking and giggling and playing with a four-year-old. I guess you really must be a child at heart to be able to do that.

Of course, not all relationships are smooth sailing. Mama Tes and I still have some issues we need to work out. There are things we don't agree on and there were times we did not speak with each other for awhile over the ten years that we've been together. But there is one thing that had never changed and that is her love for my children. And because of that, I can overlook any differences we have and would ever have as long as those differences do not affect my children's safety and health.

With all the news about monster nannies we've been hearing everyday, it's hard to find someone to take care of our children when we're out or busy with work. I am just thankful that I had been blessed with people like her in my life. I am thankful that my children have her in their lives, to bring extra warmth, extra fun and extra laughter.
